It was sort of set up that way where it only does perma save after you complete a mission. The introduction is basically one extended mission since it sets up the entire plot and overall mood of the game. A lot of what Far Cry 4 is plays like a movie.

Try bringing up the map to fast travel, or the menu to reload the save/checkpoint before the death occurs. Or if possible, have a friend invite you into a cooperative game so that you get pulled into that game, before being able to return to your own.
