The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is a competent off-road vehicle that is able to navigate difficult terrain with a reasonable amount of ease. The vehicle has the capability of driving in 4x4 mode in addition to its 2WD drivetrain and 8-speed transmission.

Of these options, the Grand Vitara (pre-2006 redesign) would be the best for off-road driving. It's a real 4wd, with a solid rear axle and manual transfer case shifter. My wife had a 2000 Chevy Tracker (identical to the Grand Vitara) and I found it to be a reliable, well-designed vehicle. It was also very easy to work on. Here you go!
So if you’re after a compact SUV that can do 4×4, the Grand Vitara should, at the very least, be on your test drive list, too. It’s tough and simplistic.
